McLaren Unveils The 540C Coupe
McLaren have now unveiled their fourth car this year and the second car in the Sport Series at the 2015 Shanghai Motor Show. The 540C Coupe will be the entry level McLaren and will join the 570C Coupe in the Sport Series line up. The Sport Series aims to expose the brand to new audience and to bring out a supercar that can be used every day. The deliveries for the cheapest McLaren are set to start in 2016.
The 540C, being a pure McLaren sports car, shares its DNA with other vehicles from the brand. This includes a light weight carbon fibre chassis which has been designed with a focus on day-to-day usability. The light weight chassis along with aluminium body panels ensures a dry weight of just 1,311 kgs.
The car is powered by McLaren’s award winning 3.8 litre, twin turbocharged V8 engine which produces 540 PS and 540 Nm of torque. The car gets stop-start technology to increase efficiency. The engine is mated to a seven speed seamless shift gearbox (SSG) which sends the power to the rear wheels. The light weight design along with the powertrain helps this mid-engined supercar to rocket to 100 km/hr from a standstill in 3.5 seconds. The car reaches a top speed of 320 km/hr.
A new suspension system on the 540C features front and rear anti-roll bars, F1 style dual wishbones and independent adaptive dampers. The adaptive dampers offer control through three handling settings, namely Normal, Sport and Track. The car also features a Brake Steer System. The McLaren 540C runs on 19-inch wheels at the front and 20-inch wheels at the rear. These are fitted with Pirelli PZero tyres which have been specifically designed for the Sport Series.
The 540C offers a spacious interior with a focus on ergonomics. It features leather upholstery on the seats, dashboard and lower doors. It also gets a seven-inch touchscreen IRIS system on the centre console. The IRIS system controls the entertainment system, navigation, Bluetooth and even the air conditioning.
